GENERAL INFORMATION

Aim of the call

The purpose of this call is to select 3 (three) artists for the art residency program of Marginalia+Lab in the year of 2011. Selected artists will develop creation and experimentation projects through a period of 2 (two) months each, between March and July of 2011, at Marginalia+Lab, lab located in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

This call is aimed at artists, designers, musicians, technicians, engineers, architects, programmers, educators and any person that develops creation and experimentation works in the intersection of art and technology.

Marginalia+Lab seeks, with this program, to promote oportunities for the deepening of aesthetical and technical researches, in a direct contact with the local comunity of artists and developers of many different fields. Thus, througout the residency period, meetings, workshops and other interchange activities will be promoted with the participation of selected artists and open to the general public.

Orientation of proposals

Among the different approaches of this broad field, frailly named art and technology, it is expected that the proposals present original appropriations and even interferences on surrounding technological, social and cultural substrate.

In this sense, though in a non-exclusive and non-restrictive way, themes of intererest of this call include the do it yourself and do it with others cultures, high end low tech approaches, utopic or impossible projects, as well as approximation to local contexts and urban spaces.

Nevertheless, those interested in applying are stimulated to propose their own perspective on the field, even if they are dissonants with these proposed approaches.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCIES

The 3 (three) artists will be selected according to the following categories:

- 1 (one) local artist: from Belo Horizonte or its Metropolitan Area;

- 1 (one) Brazilian artist, from anywhere in the country;

- 1 (one) international artist, from any other place out of Brazil;

Their residency periods will be as follows:

- Artist from Belo Horizonte or Metropolitan Area: March 15th to May 15th;

- Brazilian artist: April 15th to June 15th;

- Foreigner Artist: May 15th to July 15th;

Laboratory

Selected artists will be able to use Marginalia+Lab’s facilities to develop their proposals, throughout the period of their residency.

The lab is situated at Av. Brasil, 75, Cj. 3 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and has a versatile space, of approximately 120 square meters, able to hold different activities.

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions will be accepted from December 8th of 2010 to February 6th 2011 [deadline extended] and must be made exclusively through the online form.

Submissions may be placed by individuals or groups. In the case of group submissions, one of the members must be the responsible for the submission and every benefit offered by the lab will be limited to one of the group, including food support, reward, lodging and tickets, when that is the case.

PRAZOS:

Besides personal information, the submission is composed basically by a free work proposal for the residency period and by the portfolio of the artist or group. This may be sent in a PDF file, presented by a webpage or in a gathering of the artist’s profiles in services such as Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, among others.

Under aged authors

The submssion by minors under 18 years old is restricted. Those MAY NOT, under any circumstance, be the direct recipient of the benefits offerd by Marginalia+Lab.

Therefore, their participation in residency activities will only be allowed as an integrant of a group and, even so, when expressly authorized by their legal guardian.

SELECTION

Selection Comittee

The selection comittee will be formed by the coordination team and by members they invite to integrate it.

Evaluation Criteria

Submitted proposals will be judged according to the followin criteria:

- Quality of the proposal and portfolio;

- Suitability to the purpose and context of this call;

Disclosure of results

The results will be disclose on the lab’s webpage and the selected will receive an email at the address informed on the submission process.

BENEFITS OFFERED TO SELECTED ARTISTS

Grant

To selected artist, a grant of R$ 3,000.00 will be offered, for the whole residency period.

In case of group submissions, the responsible for the enrollment will be the recipient of the grant and it should be shared by the group’s members.

Support for travelling and lodging

It will be offered for the Brazilian and foreign artist that reside out of Belo Horizonte and Metropolitan Area.

Food support

For selected artists, a food support for maintenance will be offered during the residency period.

Infra-structure for development

The selected artists will have daily access to the lab, as well as equipment, tools and the common structure of Marginalia+Lab, which they may use freely, according to the lab’s basic rules and always taking care for the maintenance and conservation of the equipment tools and structures they might use.

The space and work structure will be shared among the artist and other residents, as well as with activities periodically developped by the lab, such as workshops, meetings, workgroups and others.

Meetings with artists and researchers

Throughout the residency period, at least 2 (two) meetings will be organized with artists, researchers or curators whose works realte to the proposal in development by the artist.

Diffusion of developed works

Marginalia+Lab will diffund the works in online medium, on the labs webpage and in diverse communication actions.

An exhibition of the works is also expected, with the works developed by the 3 (three) resident artists, which should be held on July of 2011, at the end of the residency period.

SELECTED ARTISTS’ OBLIGATIONS

Lecture or meeting

As part of the residency activities, the artist compromises on participating of a lecture, open meeting or portfolio presentation in the beginning of their activities at Marginalia+Lab.

Workshop

The resident artist should also offer at least one activity open to the public and with a duration of aproximately one week.

The model for this activity is open and may be adapted to the artist’s proposal, but it must be a moment the opening and sharing of knowledge and processes of his or hers own work.

Development and documentation of proposals

Selected artists compromise on developing a work of creation, experimentation or research related to the proposal described in the submission.

All the work must be documented on the lab’s webpage, through different tools that will be offered.

At the end of the residency, the artist must reach to a result or register suitable for public exhibition, display or performance. This final format will be publically presente in the exhibition which is expected to be organized in July of 2011.

Credits

The selected artist compromises on crediting Marginalia+Lab as a supporter in the credits of the works developed during the residencies.

Use of image

The artists also agree upon submission to authorize the use of images of themselves and their projects – produced during the period of the workshop – free of charge, for purposes of institutional and cultural publicity by the organizers, sponsors and supporters of the program and their eventual cultural incentive programs, in any kind of media and at any time.

Subscription constitutes awareness and acceptance by the author or representative of the group of every aspect of these rules.

The final decision and decisions about situations not expressly mentioned in this call are the responsibility of the organizing team, without appeal.
